AccessPORT-Tuned AMS Alpha 12 GT-R Goes 8s!

Posted by on 01 Aug 2011 | Tagged as: Drag Strip, GT-R, Motorsports, Nissan, Racer Recap

AMS has once again broken the “Fastest GT-R in the World” record with their 1500hp, AccessPORT-tuned “Alpha 12″ R35 GT-R. The crew recently took this unholy beast to the drag strip and laid down some serious rubber to run through the traps at 8.975@169.49mph! In addition, the team smashed through the 60-130mph acceleration record for a road car with a time of 3.34 seconds. AMS claims that “this makes the AMS Alpha 12 GT-R the fastest recorded street car to date from 60-130 mph!!!” This amazing record-breaking run was made on the stock ECU with an AccessPORT and the AMS “Alpha 12″ turbo and engine package. The AMS Alpha 12 package is good for 1500hp, with all tuning is done via the stock ECU, a COBB Tuning AccessPORT and COBB Tuning AccessTUNER software, proving once again that you don’t need a stand-alone ECU to make big GT-R power.

Congratuations to AMS on this monster achievement! To learn more about how the AccessPORT can give your GT-R huge power, visit our GT-R AccessPORT Page, or call COBB Tuning at 1-866-922-3059. Be sure to catch the end of the video as the GT-R paints the pavement black with big fat strips of rubber!

TopSpeed’s AccessPORT-Tuned GT-R Sweeps One Lap of America!

Posted by on 08 Jun 2011 | Tagged as: AccessPORT Racer Spotlight, GT-R, Nissan

COBB Tuning would like to congratulate One Lap of America winners TopSpeed Motorsports for dominating the event in their AccessPORT-Tuned Nissan GT-R! Doug Wilks & Leh Keen dominated the event by sweeping all the road course sections and finishing up 500 points ahead of 2nd place!

“TopSpeed Motorsports would like to thank the guys at Cobb Tuning for their support during the 2011 OneLap of America Series,” said Nathan Cicio of TopSpeed. “Cobb really went above and beyond with not only the quality and performance of the parts they provided, but also with amazing customer service. They were there for us every step of the way if we needed anything during the event. Thankfully, however, the parts performed flawlessly resulting in a dominating 2011 OneLap victory!”

One Lap of America is a grueling coast-to-coast driving event that pits drivers against the clock, each other and their machines. Teams must travel from track to track and compete in racing events in an effort to collect the most points along the way. Throughout the event, teams must race at one track and then transit long distances overnight to be ready to drive again in the morning! Having a mechanically fit car can mean more than having the fastest car, but the TopSpeed team had both!

The TopSpeed GT-R is sporting the very latest from the COBB Tuning product line for the GT-R including the AP-NIS-006 AccessPORT with Transmission tuning ability, SF Intake system and our upgraded silicon intercooler coupler kit as well as the GT-R Dual XLE By-Pass Valve kit. An AMS turbo kit has also been fitted to the car for extra power. The car was also equipped with a complete aerodynamics package for more downforce.

“We couldn’t have asked more of the COBB Tuning parts,” said Nathan. “From the GT-R Accessport to the hard parts they supplied, together they worked in perfect harmony in order to produce the power we needed to put our Nissan GT-R at the front of the pack. We won 14 of 14 road course events and 15 of 18 overall events in total, winning by over 500 total points. I can’t thank Cobb enough or say enough about their level of service and quality of parts!”

COBB Tuning Wraps up a Successful RTA Season at the Auto Club Speedway Finale

Posted by on 15 Nov 2010 | Tagged as: COBB Tuning Motorsports, GT-R, Motorsports, Nissan, Redline Time Attack, STI, Subaru, Uncategorized

The COBB Tuning Motorsports Team finished out the 2010 Redline Time Attack season as champions! Brian Lock and the Nissan GT-R clinched the Modified AWD Class Championship and Cameron Benner in his 2006 Subaru STI captured the Street Tire AWD Class Championship. This marks a fantastic end to a first-year effort with COBB Tuning fielding a full-season two-car time attack team. The team pushed the envelope with these two AccessPORT powered cars and are very proud of the performance of the racecars as well as the performance of the team!

The Modified class championship came down to the final event with just 21 points separating the 1st place COBB Tuning team and the 2nd place Takata Time Attack/LIC Motosports STI. With 40 points up for grabs, a mechanical failure or driver error on this high speed track could mean disaster. Running a car as powerful and technically advanced as the GT-R, the specter of a mechanical DNF is never far from the team’s consciousness. Early weekend issues that were originally thought to be related to the very complex AWD system turned out to be related to a set of old tires, and once replaced, the car performed flawlessly from that point on and broke the Modified Class track record on the first lap of the Record Assault Sunday morning, securing first place. This would be the winning lap as neither 2nd place Mike Cronin Jr. in the Fontana Nissan GT-R or 3rd place James Elterman in the LIC STI could match that pace.

With the Modified Class win in the bag, the team jumped back into the pits for a quick tire change to Yokohama slicks in an effort to take the Super Modified class track record as well. Despite a blistering 1:37 lap time from the Nissan GT-R, it was not fast enough to defeat the Super Modified class champion GST Motorsports “L” Impreza, which set a new Super Modified track record with a 1:35.5 lap time. However, a second place podium in Super Modified AWD was certainly worth the team’s efforts.

Cameron Benner, who has finished on the podium at every single event this year came into this event with the Street Tire class championship already locked. Not content to rest on his laurels, Cameron was determined to take another class win as well as set a new class lap record. However, during Friday afternoon practice his engine overheated, spewing coolant onto the windshield during his third lap, a clear sign of a blown head gasket, which was confirmed in the paddock. But Time Attack is all about posting one fast lap and the team was determined to post it! They proceeded to pull the engine and do a track-side rebuild. Cameron also noted that his transmission was showing signs of serious problems as well, with a balky 4th gear engagement.

Undaunted, the team managed to have the engine pulled and completely apart on Friday evening and with new parts supplied by Subaru of Ontario Friday night, the team started the reassembly process Saturday morning and had the engine together and dropped in the car before lunch with Cameron heading back out on track Saturday afternoon. The tireless efforts of Danny Heng, Tim Bailey, Brandon Lumpkins and Eric Bizek saw the car back on track and showing good speed. With a freshly rebuilt engine, the STI was ready to take on Steve Ruiz in the StopTech EVO and COBB’s own Jon Drenas in yet another EVO, both of whom resurfaced for this final race and were both very fast earlier in the season.

Not wanting to push their luck on a failing transmission and a hastily refreshed engine, the team opted to sit out Sunday morning practice and go all out for the first timed sessions on Sunday afternoon. Sadly, the transmission would not hold out and 4th gear disappeared during Cameron’s out lap and he was forced to run without it. On a track like Auto Club with many fast straights, the loss of 4th gear proved to large a handicap and Cameron was only able to post a 1:50 lap time, putting him into 4th place. His only non-podium finish of the season, it was a bitter-sweet end to a championship winning season for the young driver.

The final act of the 2010 Redline Time Attack season had all the drama of the rest of the season with a close race to finish line and a champagne-soaked podium…

With only the wheel-to-wheel Super Session left in the weekend, the team decided to mount the Toyo RA-1 tires and run in the Modified Class in an effort to make the Modified Class victory complete. Brian and the GT-R were gridded next to the Super Modified 350Z of Mike Cronin Jr. running slicks and much less Lose Weight Exercise, compared to the very heavy GT-R on treaded R-compound tires. This would prove to be a fight of giant straight line horsepower versus high-grip in the tight infield bends of Auto Club Speedway.

As the green flag dropped on the field, Lock and Cronin Jr. rocketed away from the pack and would run the 5 laps almost nose to tail with the Fontana Nissan 350Z just inches off the COBB GT-R’s bumper, looking for the pass at every corner. However, the horsepower of the GT-R proved to be enough to hold the Z at bay for the overall Super Session win as well as collecting the final points needed to slam the lid closed on the Modified AWD Class.

As the sun set for the final time on the 2010 Redline Time Attack championship the team was able to smile with a sense of pride of accomplishing so much in such a short time with championship wins in both the Modified and Street Tire AWD classes.

Not only did the COBB Tuning drivers and racecars prove themselves on the track, the COBB Tuning crew distinguished themselves in the paddock. The COBB Tuning Motorsports team was presented with the final award of the season, the 2010 Redline Time Attack “Team of the Year” Award, for showing dedication to sportsmanship in the pits and towards their fellow teams and drivers.

COBB Tuning would like to thank the Redline Time Attack organization, our dedicated team of all-volunteer pit crew members, our sponsors, drivers, family members (both at the track and at home), our competitors for the friendly and fun paddock atmosphere and close competition and finally our customers and fans for your support during this 2010 season. Without all you, none of this would have been possible.

Racer Recap: Brian Lock takes a rain-drenched win at Infineon Raceway!

Posted by on 29 Oct 2010 | Tagged as: GT-R, Motorsports, Nissan, Racer Recap, Redline Time Attack

Brian Lock Stands Next to GT-R

There are weekends that the GT-R’s wide tires and huge torque numbers play in our favor; this was not one of those weekends.  I don’t believe I used full throttle for more than maybe 10 seconds of any given wet lap, there was no point.  I spent all weekend trying to keep the car off of full boost because even at wastegate pressures it was enough to spin the tires through 4th gear.  Infineon Raceway is a fast and treacherous track in the dry; in the wet it is absolutely unforgiving.  One mistake and you are in a wall, as many of my competitors learned this weekend.  And I learned that one Innocent off in the mud going maybe 50mph, was enough to completely destroy the front of the car.

The weekend started off well, we were finding a few tweeks here and there to get more grip from the GT-R in the rain.  We struggled with sound a bit but found that a combination of a turn down and me short shifting by the decibel meter was enough to drop below the required 103 db.  By the end of testing on Saturday we came to the conclusion that there was no cure for our wide tires, which caused us to hydroplane like no one’s business, and huge power required to rocket our 3,700lb GT-R down the straight.  I just had to be careful, concentrate, and steer clear of the puddles.  I explain to a worried Tim Bailey that he had nothing to worry about; I was in complete control as long as I stayed out of the puddles.

Famous last words, as they say. Sunday morning the sky really opened up and the rain came down harder than ever.  The amount of water running off the mountain that Infineon is perched on was amazing.  Steady and hard rain all night was creating muddy rivers across the track.  The worst part though was the rain started to fall so hard, visibility fell, and the track reflected the clouds like one BIG puddle.  At that point I was at the mercy of the track and hit a puddle I could not see.  All I could do was keep the car pointed forward and minimize damage which I thought I had done well until “CRUNCH!” Bye-bye front splitter and lower lip.  I had now successfully removed any front downforce I had, and would have to navigate the already tough conditions without any front aero aid.

After sitting second in the first timed session where I redesigned the front of the car, the track started to dry and we elected to go out and give it another shot.  Enough of the standing water on the track had cleared and I just needed to navigate around puddles and deal with damp conditions.  I ran 3 clean laps with steadily decreasing lap times and I regained my confidence, and the last lap was good enough for the win, keeping our winning-streak alive.

The super session was lots of fun as usual.  I started first in Mod, and my only real competition on track was all in front of me.  The GST “L” was in a league of its own in the wet this weekend and quickly left everyone in the dust.  That left the Works EVO with my old rival from my days in USTCC, and the RTA newcomer Brandon Davis in his World Challenge Mustang.  We had a good three way battle going until the GT-R decided to get back at me for damaging its good looks earlier in the weekend and threw an AWD code.  I was now in RWD and decided to just sit back and take the win in Mod.

On the final lap going through the last two corners I realized that Brandon Davis, for whatever reason, was having just as much trouble as me and I was catching him. Wanting some bragging rights by beating a Super Mod car, not to mention a World Challenge Mustang, I pushed hard.  It was RWD vs. RWD. An American big V8 vs. a Japanese twin turbo V6 and we looked to have the advantage.  It came right down to the last corner where I made my move and late-braked on the inside of turn 11. Unfortunately I had a hell of a time getting the power down on the dry line and Davis was able to get a better drive out of the corner.  I tried one more time throwing the GT-R sideways through a puddle on the inside of turn 12 just before start finish, but it was not enough and I finished about half a car length behind.

It was a high stress weekend for me piloting our beast of a car around the track. As the track started to dry during the super session I think we got a little redemption for our wet performance by our battle with the Super Mod Mustang with no splitter and RWD only.  I look forward to a nice cool and dry Auto Club Speedway event.  Look for our GT-R to be splitting time between Super Mod and Mod in hopes of competing for the overall course record. See everyone there!

GT-R AccessPORT with Transmission Support!

Posted by on 26 Oct 2010 | Tagged as: AccessPORT, GT-R, Nissan, Product Updates

GT-R AccessPORT

The COBB Tuning GT-R AccessPORT, the most popular engine management solution amongst R-35 enthusiasts, just got better! Introducing the AccessPORT with transmission control module (TCM) support, the world’s first hand-held ECU and TCM flashing, managing and monitoring assistant, adding a whole new level of transmission control on top of the already impressive engine management capabilities of the original GT-R AccessPORT. COBB Tuning brings the simplicity of the AccessPORT to transmission control module flashing. Now GT-R owners can install maps to enhance launch control and make changes to important transmission settings that enhance drivability and improve performance, all with the simple push of a button!

Just like the original AccessPORT for the Nissan R-35 GT-R, installation is simple. No tools are required. No additional “piggy-back” hardware. No mailing the factory ECU or TCM across the country. No vehicle downtime. No waiting. Not even a computer is required. Just plug the AccessPORT in, flash the ECU and TCM, and enjoy the thrill of increased torque, horsepower and transmission responsiveness.

Installing the AccessPORT on the TCM starts with downloading the OEM TCM ROM for safekeeping, so the TCM can be returned to its stock configuration at any time. Once the OEM TCM ROM is stored, the AccessPORT flashes a new Level 1 map onto the TCM that is based on the Nissan LC2 logic upgrade, but increases launch revs to 3,300RPM and includes more aggressive clutch engagement and throttle curves than stock LC2 logic. The result is a positive launch that gets the GT-R off and running harder than the stock LC2 logic, but with smoother clutch engagement than the previous LC1 logic. Still not enough for you? A simple reflash of the TCM with the Level 2 map will have you experiencing the increased punch from raising the launch revs to 3,750RPM!

The R-35 GT-R transmission is an impressive, but complicated engineering wonder, and sometimes adjustments are in order to get it just right. Excessive clutch drag while stationary will cause the GT-R to want to creep forward at a stoplight, while too little drag will make it feel like an automatic’s torque converter. COBB Tuning has implemented Clutch Touch Point adjustment via the AccessPORT, offering +/-7 levels of adjustment to set clutch drag right where the driver wants it. This is a live adjustment that does not require a TCM reflash, simply select the desired level of the Clutch Touch Point engagement, hit Enter and drive!

The original AccessPORT opens the door to impressive power gains for the GT-R, which can exceed the transmission’s ability to manage that added power, resulting in clutch slip and excessive clutch wear. The AccessPORT with TCM support offers Clutch Capacity adjustment, which controls the hydraulic pressure applied to the clutch plates. Yet another on the fly adjustment without the need for a reflash, simply select Clutch Capacity from the AccessPORT menu to reveal +/-7 levels of adjustment to control clutch clamping force. Higher horsepower GT-R’s can eliminate unwanted clutch slip with a +2 or +3 level of Clutch Capacity. Don’t let all that power go to waste!

Due to the complex nature of the GT-R’s transmission, normal wear and tear can cause jerky shifting and less than ideal drivability. Nissan recommends an annual gearbox optimization routine to recalibrate the transmission. The AccessPORT with TCM support incorporates this Clutch Gear Learning routine and allows the owner to recalibrate at will, without a potentially expensive trip to the dealership. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions via the AccessPORT screen and recalibrate the transmission to eliminate wear related drivability compromises.

Of course, the Nissan GT-R AccessPORT with TCM support comes with all of the power gains and features of the original GT-R AccessPORT. Store multiple maps, live map switching on-the-fly, fast map flashing, factory in-dash display knock indicator, data logger, monitor engine sensors, measure 1/4 mile and 0-60mph times, read and clear DTC codes, even flash a valet map to prevent abuse while out on the town or an antitheft map to prevent engine start. For the ultimate power gains, have your GT-R professionally tuned on a dyno by a tuning expert and extract the maximum horsepower available from your combination of performance enhancing modifications. And should the need ever arise, simply uninstall the AccessPORT and the ECU and TCM are restored to their original condition.

The COBB AccessPORT with TCM support is the ultimate engine and transmission management solution available for the Nissan R-35 GT-R. Access the potential of your Nissan GT-R today!

Part Number: AP-NIS-006
Retail Price: $1,495.00

New Updates for Nissan GT-R AccessPORT! Tune your car in a flash!

Posted by on 05 Oct 2010 | Tagged as: AccessPORT, Announcements, COBB Tuning, GT-R, Map Updates, Nissan, Product Updates, Updates

COBB Tuning has added three new features to the COBB Tuning Nissan GT-R AccessPORT that will revolutionize how drivers will enjoy their cars. Introducing On the Fly Map Switching, Fast Map Flashing and in-dash Knock Indicator to monitor knock in real time!

On the Fly Map Switching!

COBB Tuning has engineered a brand new way of switching maps on the fly! GT-R owners can now switch maps while driving, simply by using the factory cruise control switches on the steering wheel and see which map has been selected via the in-dash display boost gauge. Our new v300 Off-The-Shelf maps have the performance map loaded in the default slot 0 and a low-boost economy map in slot 1*. ProTuners can create map files with up to 9 different On-the-Fly selectable maps! Follow this link to watch a video of how On-The-Fly Map Switching works.

Fast Flash is Here!

The flash time required for the COBB Tuning AccessPORT to flash a new map file to the ECU has been reduced from 10 minutes to 40 seconds or less for all GT-R AccessPORTs! This enhancement dramatically improves the dyno-tuning workflow for professional tuners, as well as makes end-user flashing for different fuel grades, boost levels and security features much more convenient**.  Follow this link to watch a video describing Fast Flash.

Knock Indicator

COBB Tuning’s new Knock Indicator displays knock events in real time, as they occur, on the GT-R’s in-dash display**. This is a very useful way to immediately see if a new modification is causing knock or if a local fuel quality is not as advertised. This is a critical monitor for drivers who push their GT-Rs to the limit! Follow this link to watch a video of the new Knock Indicator in action.

To use these new features, simply update the AccessPORT firmware following these Step-By-Step Instructions. In addition, all v300 OTS maps can be found in the Nissan AccessPORT Map Database.

COBB Tuning is committed to bringing the GT-R enthusiast community new products and features that will enhance how they enjoy and drive their cars. Stay tuned for new AccessPORT enhancements in the coming months!

* Only Map switching enabled v300 Off-The-Shelf and AccessTUNER Pro v1.8.6.0-498 maps will support On-The-Fly map switching. This feature will not work on maps released prior to this release.
** Requires AccessPORT firmware 1.6.3.0-496 or later.

AccessPORT-Tuned GT-R Breaks into the 9′s!

Posted by on 05 Oct 2010 | Tagged as: AccessTUNER Pro, Drag Strip, Events, GT-R, Motorsports, Nissan

British GT-R-tuner GTC Racing has once again shattered the R35 GT-R 1/4-mile record with a blistering sub-10 second run in their AccessPORT-tuned GT-R. This car is a showcase of GTC’s lineup of parts and features, among other things, twin GT30R turbos that give this GT-R the extra thrust it needs to break through the 9-second barrier. The record was broken at England’s famed Santa Pod raceway, one of the few dragstrips in the UK. Look for more speed out of GTC in the future! If you are in need of some unnatural thrust, check out GTC Racing’s website and be sure to pick up an AccessPORT!
