COBB Tuning “Big” SF Intake for Nissan GT-R

Posted by on 01 Nov 2011 | Tagged as: AccessPORT, GT-R, Nissan, Product Updates, SF Intake, Vehicles

COBB Tuning is proud to announce the release of our latest addition to our Nissan GT-R performance parts: The COBB Tuning Big SF Intake. The Big SF Intake is a 3″ ID intake designed to open the door to high-power builds in the future, yet work effortlessly with an otherwise stock GT-R. The Big SF Intake kit future-proofs your intake, so you won’t need to upgrade this component later if you decide to go down the path of major modifications. Furthermore, it installs as easily as our regular SF Intake, without any cutting or trimming of bodywork.

In stock form, the R35 ECU measures airflow using a Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor located in the stock intake system. As modifications add up and increase power, the airflow can increase to the point that it exceeds the MAF sensor’s maximum capacity, preventing the ECU from accurately measuring air mass, and thus unable to deliver the appropriate amount of fuel. The Big SF Intake increases the inner diameter of the intake tubing, increasing the cross section of the intake and allowing the MAF sensor to read lower for the same amount of ingested air. This gives the sensor the necessary headroom to read accurately for airflow higher than the stock system was designed for.

COBB Tuning has used the Big SF Intake to support builds of over 600HP and 600TQ at the wheels, gains of 40% over a stock GT-R!

Changing the calibration of the MAF sensor necessitates tuning changes to recalibrate the ECU. COBB Tuning has you covered here as well with a set of free AccessPORT Big SF Intake Off-The-Shelf maps for all supported GT-R Stage1 and Stage2 vehicles. Big SF Intake maps are available for download from the Nissan GT-R AccessPORT Map Database.

The Big SF Intake shares all of the same quality features of its popular smaller brother. Constructed of 3-inch diameter aluminum tubing with TIG welded bracketry and MAF sensor mount and finished with a tough black crinkle coating for an OEM quality appearance. High-flow K&N cone filter elements fit through the factory openings in the bumper. Your choice of high-quality COBB Blue or Steath Black silicone couplers are used to join the intake to the factory system.

If you looking to upgrade your GT-R’s intake and are considering modifying your GT-R for more power down the road, the COBB Tuning Big SF Intake will meet your immediate intake-upgrade needs with matching AccessPORT calibrations, and will meet airflow demands as you continue to modify your car in your quest for more horsepower. It doesn’t get any better than this!

Nissan GT-R AccessPORT Gets Speed Density Tuning and High Power Maps

Posted by on 31 Oct 2011 | Tagged as: AccessPORT, AccessTUNER Pro, Firmware Update, GT-R, Nissan

COBB Tuning continues to break new ground in the Nissan GT-R R35 tuning world with the latest round of updates for the AccessPORT. Speed Density logic has been added to the AccessPORT and AccessTUNER capabilities, enabling the tuning of large turbo builds and very high horsepower applications using the stock ECU. This big news is further bolstered by additional vehicle support for the 2009 JDM VSpec GT-R and a beta release of High Power Off-The-Shelf maps that extract even more power from the engine without requiring a custom tune.

Read on to learn how the easiest and most convenient tuning solution for the Nissan GT-R R35 continues to lead the GT-R tuning industry with sophisticated tuning tools and the most sought after features and functionality!

Speed Density Tuning Support
In stock form, the R35 ECU measures airflow using a Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor located in the stock intake system. Large turbo and very high horsepower applications move so much air that they exceed the MAF sensor’s maximum capacity and make MAF based tuning impractical. For these types of vehicles, COBB Tuning has implemented Speed Density tuning logic in AccessPORT firmware and AccessTUNER software, allowing these big-build GT-R’s to be easily tuned using familiar tuning tools and leveraging the convenience and sophistication of the OEM ECU.

This powerful new tuning logic is available to both professional tuning shops in AccessTUNER Pro and experienced end-users in AccessTUNER Race. Since Speed Density is designed for big power builds with unique modifications, Off-The-Shelf maps are impractical and each vehicle will require custom tuning. The all new GT-R Tuning Guide clearly explains the tuning process for both MAF and Speed Density tuning for pros and experienced DIYs alike.

New Vehicle Support
The 2009 JDM VSpec GT-R is added to the growing list of supported Nissan GT-R R35 vehicles, bringing the total up to 19 unique applications spanning multiple model years, regions and hardware specifications. 2009 JDM VSpec GT-R’s now get the simplicity of large power gains at the push of a button accompanied by a host of interactive features and functionality the AccessPORT provides with it’s vibrant color screen and intuitive interface.

Switchable Map Throttle Control
The AccessPORT allows on-the-fly map switching through the GT-R’s cruise control system, allowing the user to change maps from, say, a conservative daily-driving map to a high-boost, big-power map with just the push of a button. To take further advantage of COBB Tuning’s map switching capability on the GT-R, each of the individual 9 map slots can now have unique throttle mapping to provide different throttle response for each map. This puts even more vehicle performance, response and customization at the driver’s fingertips. Literally.

If you are not familiar with Map Switching on the GT-R, the following video should explain how easy it is.

HP Calibrations

Based on customer feedback, COBB Tuning has released a full set of Beta High Power (HP) Off-The-Shelf maps for Stage1 and Stage2 cars. These HP maps close the gap between our standard GT-R Off-The-Shelf maps and a full custom tune performed by a professional tuner. The Stage2 Beta HP maps, on their highest boost setting, have generated 30HP and 45TQ peak over the standard Stage2 Off-The-Shelf maps and show gains of up to 45HP at 5670RPM!

With great power comes even greater responsibility, and these maps are no exception. While these maps make more power, they do so by utilizing the stock fuel system to its absolute limit, and in some cases the demand placed on the fuel system may exceed its capacity to deliver adequate fuel to run safely.

Data logging vehicle performance is an absolute requirement when using these maps to ensure that the mechanical systems of your GT-R are up to the task of supporting these Beta HP maps. Instructions on how and what parameters to data log are explained in this GT-R Beta HP Data Logging Instructions document as well as how to evaluate performance to determine if these maps are safe to use on your GT-R.

These impressive new Beta HP Off-The-Shelf maps can be downloaded from the special Nissan GT-R HP Map Database, which reminds you of the special attention required to ensure your vehicle can take advantage of these maps while maintaining adequate safety margin.

AccessPORT-Tuned AMS Alpha 12 GT-R Goes 8s!

Posted by on 01 Aug 2011 | Tagged as: Drag Strip, GT-R, Motorsports, Nissan, Racer Recap

AMS has once again broken the “Fastest GT-R in the World” record with their 1500hp, AccessPORT-tuned “Alpha 12″ R35 GT-R. The crew recently took this unholy beast to the drag strip and laid down some serious rubber to run through the traps at 8.975@169.49mph! In addition, the team smashed through the 60-130mph acceleration record for a road car with a time of 3.34 seconds. AMS claims that “this makes the AMS Alpha 12 GT-R the fastest recorded street car to date from 60-130 mph!!!” This amazing record-breaking run was made on the stock ECU with an AccessPORT and the AMS “Alpha 12″ turbo and engine package. The AMS Alpha 12 package is good for 1500hp, with all tuning is done via the stock ECU, a COBB Tuning AccessPORT and COBB Tuning AccessTUNER software, proving once again that you don’t need a stand-alone ECU to make big GT-R power.

Congratuations to AMS on this monster achievement! To learn more about how the AccessPORT can give your GT-R huge power, visit our GT-R AccessPORT Page, or call COBB Tuning at 1-866-922-3059. Be sure to catch the end of the video as the GT-R paints the pavement black with big fat strips of rubber!

TopSpeed’s AccessPORT-Tuned GT-R Sweeps One Lap of America!

Posted by on 08 Jun 2011 | Tagged as: AccessPORT Racer Spotlight, GT-R, Nissan

COBB Tuning would like to congratulate One Lap of America winners TopSpeed Motorsports for dominating the event in their AccessPORT-Tuned Nissan GT-R! Doug Wilks & Leh Keen dominated the event by sweeping all the road course sections and finishing up 500 points ahead of 2nd place!

“TopSpeed Motorsports would like to thank the guys at Cobb Tuning for their support during the 2011 OneLap of America Series,” said Nathan Cicio of TopSpeed. “Cobb really went above and beyond with not only the quality and performance of the parts they provided, but also with amazing customer service. They were there for us every step of the way if we needed anything during the event. Thankfully, however, the parts performed flawlessly resulting in a dominating 2011 OneLap victory!”

One Lap of America is a grueling coast-to-coast driving event that pits drivers against the clock, each other and their machines. Teams must travel from track to track and compete in racing events in an effort to collect the most points along the way. Throughout the event, teams must race at one track and then transit long distances overnight to be ready to drive again in the morning! Having a mechanically fit car can mean more than having the fastest car, but the TopSpeed team had both!

The TopSpeed GT-R is sporting the very latest from the COBB Tuning product line for the GT-R including the AP-NIS-006 AccessPORT with Transmission tuning ability, SF Intake system and our upgraded silicon intercooler coupler kit as well as the GT-R Dual XLE By-Pass Valve kit. An AMS turbo kit has also been fitted to the car for extra power. The car was also equipped with a complete aerodynamics package for more downforce.

“We couldn’t have asked more of the COBB Tuning parts,” said Nathan. “From the GT-R Accessport to the hard parts they supplied, together they worked in perfect harmony in order to produce the power we needed to put our Nissan GT-R at the front of the pack. We won 14 of 14 road course events and 15 of 18 overall events in total, winning by over 500 total points. I can’t thank Cobb enough or say enough about their level of service and quality of parts!”

AccessPORT Racer Spotlight: Cort Wagner in the Fontana Nissan GT-R takes 3rd in Circuit Battles!

Posted by on 11 Mar 2011 | Tagged as: AccessPORT Racer Spotlight, GT-R, Motorsports, Nissan, Redline Time Attack

Redline Track Events kicked off the 2011 Season with a whole new format this past weekend. The traditional Time Attack format is still in place, but Redline has added a new twist to the weekend called the Pro Track Challenge. This is a class of wheel-to-wheel racing that is a true, “run what ‘ya brung,” winner-take-all shootout. Flying the COBB Tuning flag was the AccessPORT-tuned Fontana Nissan GT-R driven by sports car veteran Cort Wagner.

The new format works like this. All the cars head out onto the track for a morning qualifying session which determines the grid for an all-hands-on-deck 5-lap wheel-to-wheel seeding race. The finishing order of the seeding race determines the bracket pairings for the heads-up, two-car, green-white-checker battles that determine the ultimate finishing order.

The field was incredibly diverse with a Nissan GT-R, Nissan 350Z, Mitsubishi EVO X, Subaru STI, Chevrolet Corvette, Pontiac GTO, Infiniti G35 and a 650hp MINI taking to the track! This double-elimination format meant that each competitor had to loseWeight Exercise two Circuit Battles to be eliminated from the competition. Winners continued on in the Winners bracket while loseWeight Exercisers dropped into the Consolation bracket. The final drivers in the Winners bracket and Consolation bracket go to a final two-lap battle to determine the ultimate winner of the event.

Cort Wagner did an impressive job of driving the Fontana Nissan GT-R up through the brackets. The Fontana Nissan GT-R is essentially a street car enhanced with the COBB Tuning AccessPORT and other readily available bolt-on performance parts! The very heavy, but very powerful, Nissan GT-R was able to hold off Lou Gigliotti in his Grand-Am Racing spec Corvette as well as got the best of Paul Brown in his wickedly fast turbocharged K&N Inifiniti G35 in back-to-back battles.

Cort ultimately took the AccessPORT powered GT-R up to the final podium position, taking home third place overall behind event winner Joey Scarallo in his monstor World Challenge Pontiac GTO and 2nd place finisher Gary Sheehan in the Fontana Nissan 350z, both of which are full-on race cars!

Make sure you tune into the Versus network to see all the action from this round on their brand new television series “Circuit Battles”, which premiers Saturday, March 26, at 2pm Eastern. For more info on the show, head to www.CircuitBattles.com.

The Redline circus moves on to Firebird Raceway in Arizona for round 2 on April 9th. For more details visit www.redlinetimeattack.com.
