Tim Bailey at COBB Tuning Surgeline, takes his new GT-R to the Drags

Posted by Travis on 30 Sep 2009 | Tagged as: Events, General

When most people get a new car they protect it like a newborn. They swaddle it with microfiber towels, avoid driving through puddles and take extra care not to harm their new pride and joy. In the case of brand new supercars, these are usually packed away into garages wrapped in a plastic bubble. But at COBB Tuning Surgeline, we do things a bit differently.

Upon taking posession of his brand new GT-R, Surgeline Tuning head calibrator, Tim Bailey, dumped a can of Torco into the tank, Installed a COBB Tuning AccessPORT with a Stage 1 map and drove to the drag strip.

With just an AccessPORT and a few ounces of Torco to compensate for less than optimal 92 octane fuels, the GT-R with Tim at the wheel was able to continually shave tenths off of an initial 11.7-second pass, eventually posting a 11.3 at 122mph.

Not to rest on this achievement alone, Tim then attended a local open track day the very next morning to put the new Nissan through its paces. Not one to drive straight for too long, he managed to get the big bruiser sideways just enough to the let all the GT-R’s computers know who was boss.

Look for ever more speed from Tim and his GT-R in the very near future as he will be adding a new exhaust system, more tuning and maybe even some larger snails.

COBB Tuning Surgeline-Tuned STI gets into the 10’s

Posted by Travis on 29 Sep 2009 | Tagged as: Announcements, Events

10.98 on street tires

Everyone has to have goals. For some of us it is material in nature, or perhaps meeting certain career aspirations. For Matt Kincaid it has been doing the 1320 dance in less than 11 seconds. This he achieved this weekend with a 10.98 pass at 122mph. This was achieved on street tires, Flaken Azenis 615s, and a mix of E85 and C16 at the Battle of the Imports event held at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Ore. Burning up all this fuel and rubber is a complete STI drivetrain swap that features a 2007 STI transmission, a built 2.5-liter block with stock STI heads and a Surgeline Tuning custom-fabricated, rotated-mount 35R setup.

While Matt was able meet his goal of a sub 11-second pass in practice on Saturday, he would be hampered by a failed clutch slave on Sunday with a best run of an 11.1-second pass. After running three runs and unable to keep the clutch engaged, Matt decided that saving the engine and perhaps the clutch would be the better part of valor. This, after making the cut in the quick 16 and then the fast 8 qualifiers. With a working clutch, Matt is convinced that a mid-10-second pass is well within reach as he was able to cut a 1.7 60-foot and was hitting 101mph in the 1/8th mile.

street, drift, drag

Also running was Tim Bailey in his brand-new, Stage 1 Nissan GT-R. With an off the shelf reflash and some Torco for safety, Tim was able to hit a best time of 11.3-seconds at 122mph. Tim also pulled his black STI out for the event. Driven by Chris Fogg, this car was able to pull a best time of 11.6 seconds but suffered two broken axels which precluded any faster runs. Overall the event was a success for COBB Tuning Surgeline. With a little more luck and some tuning, be sure to see at least Matt and the GT-R solidly into the 10s by next season.

COBB Limited Edition Secondary Oil Cooler for Nissan GT-R

Posted by Gary on 09 Sep 2009 | Tagged as: Announcements, Products

gt-roilcooler250.jpg

COBB Tuning announces the availability of the Limited Edition Secondary Oil Cooler kit for the Nissan GT-R R35. The COBB Secondary Oil Cooler reduces high engine oil temperatures that occur during extreme driving conditions. This kit utilizes an auxiliary oil cooling core that seamlessly integrates with the OEM oil cooling system, significantly reducing oil temperatures without compromise. Whether pounding around the racetrack or canyon carving during blistering heat, the COBB Secondary Oil Cooler lets your GT-R keep its cool.

Additional horsepower, high ambient temperatures, high altitude and aggressive driving can all contribute to elevated oil temperature. Lower oil temperature ensures better engine protection and longer engine life. Extensive racing and testing data shows that the COBB Secondary Oil Cooler is capable of reducing oil temperatures from extreme peaks of 130C/266F (OEM redline) to acceptable operating temperatures in the 110C/230F range.

This elegantly engineered kit sits opposite the OEM oil cooler in the unused driver side bumper duct. The design is optimized to work with the OEM oil cooler duct, which is included in this kit. Oil flow return from the OEM oil cooler is diverted to the COBB Secondary Oil Cooler for an additional oil cooling stage before being redirected back to the OEM oil return.

Execution of the COBB Secondary Oil Cooler kit leaves nothing to be desired. A Mocal air-to-oil core is used for efficiency and durability. The core is mounted to the chassis using a custom CAD designed powdercoated bracket that is designed to work with the included OEM oil cooler duct. The adaptor fittings are custom CAD designed and CNC machined aluminum with black anodizing. All hose ends are high quality aluminum -10 AN fittings with an attractive black and titanium anodized finish. Hoses are preassembled using smooth bore, lightweight synthetic rubber interiors with black nylon overbraid and encased in XRP Fyrefoil 2 radiant heat shielding for additional thermal resistance. The replacement gaskets are Nissan OEM parts.

The Limited Edition COBB Secondary Oil Cooler for the Nissan GT-R R35 is the most comprehensive solution for managing engine oil temperature.  Install a COBB Secondary Oil Cooler on your GT-R R35 and drive at the limit without distraction.

* NOTE: The COBB Secondary Oil Cooler for the Nissan GT-R requires relocation of the windshield washer bottle.

More E85 Magic at COBB Tuning!

E85 Stage2 STI

The corn juice junkies at COBB Tuning Plano wanted to see just what kind of power could be made on an mostly stock STI with just the addition of E85. The test car was a 2005 STI with a stock turbocharger, a turboback exhaust and a high-flow intake. In order to run E85, the fuel system does need to be upgraded and to that end a set of Deatschwerks 850cc injectors were installed, along with a Walbro 255lph fuel pump.

The end results were impressive, 350whp and 412lb/ft of torque! E85 not only cools the combustion chamber allowing tuners to run more timing, but it also carries much of it’s own oxygen into the combustion chamber allowing the production of more power, it also is the equivalent of 105 octane gasoline, again allowing the tuner to be more aggressive with the tune.

The STI was tuned with a COBB Tuning AccessPORT and thanks to the AccessPORT’s ability to carry multiple maps and easily switch between calibrations with the press of a button, this STI is a true flex-fuel car and can be run easily on both gasoline and E85.

For more information on the COBB Tuning AccessPORT or other COBB Tuning products or to learn more about getting your car tuned on E85, visit the COBB Tuning Website or call 801-713-0035. To contact COBB Tuning Plano call 214-291-3020. To contact COBB Tuning Surgeline visit Surgeline Tuning or call 503-670-9500.
